Study day 1

Gastrointestinal

Learning objectives include:

  • Understand the differences in management of Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis

  • Be able to advise on the different pharmacological options available for GORD/dyspepsia

  • Understand the eligibility criteria relating to OTC GI products

  • Recognise the medicines involved in the treatment of a helicobacter pylori infection

Calculations session 1:

  • The assessment and what to expect

  • Common errors and how to avoid them

  • Advice & tips for answering questions and revising

  • Doses and dose regimens, dosage and unit conversions, estimations of kidney functions

  • Quiz

Study day 2

Cardiovascular

Learning objectives include:

  • Understand the management pathway of hypertension

  • Recognise the management of different arrhythmia types and know the medications used to treat atrial fibrillation

  • Understand the role of anticoagulants in the management of blood clots

  • Use the risk tool to assess cardiovascular risk and its management

  • Know the difference in the management between NSTEMI & STEMI

Calculations session 2:

  • Concentrations, dilutions, molecular weight

  • How to approach questions and explanation of different methods

  • Quiz

Study day 3

Respiratory

Learning objectives include:

  • Understand Asthma & COPD pathways

  • Recognise different inhaler types and inhaler techniques

  • Understand the different drugs used in Asthma/COPD

  • Overview of cystic fibrosis

Calculations session 3:

  • Displacement volumes & values, infusion rates, using provided formulae

  • Cover different methods and how to approach questions

  • Quiz

Study day 4

Endocrine

Learning objectives include:

  • Understand the management of Type I/II Diabetes (including managing hypoglycaemia and understanding the medications involved)

  • Understand the management of osteoporosis in high risk individuals

  • Be familiar with the different types of HRT formulations available and be able to balance the risks vs benefits of their use

  • Understand the management of hypo/hyperthyroidis

Calculations session 4:

  • Pharmacokinetics, quantities to supply, health economics

  • Cover different methods and how to approach questions

  • Go through the questions from the pre work

  • Quiz

Study day 5

Central Nervous System (CNS)

Learning objectives include:

  • Understand the different types of seizures and management options

  • Understand the medications used in the management of Alzheimer’s dementia

  • Know the symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease and the different types of medicines used in their management

  • Highlight the different types of pain and analgesic medication

  • Understand the management pathways of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder

  • Be aware of the management of depression

Study day 6

Infection

Learning objectives include:

  • Recognise the signs & symptoms of sepsis and its management

  • Know the signs of meningitis and the emergency treatment plan involved

  • Understand the diagnosis and management of urinary tract infections in different populations of patients

  • Recognise the treatment plan for tuberculosis

  • Summarise the role of different antibiotics in the treatment of bacterial infections

  • Acknowledge the treatment of antifungal and antiviral infections

Study day 7

Genito-urinary

Learning objectives include:

  • Understand the different methods of contraception available

  • Know the contraindications associated with contraceptive use

  • Compare the combined-oral pill to the progesterone only pill

  • Understand the management of urinary/bladder disorders

Study day 8

Vaccination & First aid

Learning objectives include:

  • Be able to administer intramuscular injections for flu, Covid-19 and other vaccines

  • Be able to administer basic life support

Study day 9

Mock exam

Learning objectives include:

  • Full GPhC-style mock exam

  • Online to reflect the GPhC assessment

Study day 10

Mock exam review

Learning objectives include:

  • Full review of the mock exam

  • Highlight common mistakes made

  • Hints & tips for the GPhC assessment
